Monday 16-12-2013 (Wynyard)

Before we start, a brief review of last night:
We arrived at the penguin viewing platforms at sunset to see a small group of people and some volunteers already there. After over an hour of keen searching, chats with a volunteer and no penguins, the first few began to slowly make their way up the beach and up the steep path (where the local volunteers had campaigned for and received small ladder like steps to help the penguins). The little penguins (also called fairy penguins) were very cute and very awkward while on land. We learnt a few interesting facts about them, including how they only sleep for about 4 minutes at a time, spend most of a day in the water fishing and sleep in small burrows.

Hello! Gabby here. Today was good. We woke up quite late after our late-night penguin-watch and left the caravan park, heading to Leven Canyon. Here we went on an a short walk, trekking through beautiful fern filled forests and climbing many, many, many steep steps to arrive at a high lookout where we had a magnificent view of the steep canyon and rushing rapids. Heading back to the bus, we drove to Preston Falls and journeyed down some small steps to a lookout viewing a lovely, if not exactly thrilling waterfall. Next was the ‘Makers Workshop’ which involved displays of silk painting, glass work, wood work, cheese etc. We bought some cheese but were quite disappointed that we
didn’t get to see people actually making the cheese etc. Next was Fern Glade Reserve for spotting some platypus. Or, not. We didn’t see a single platypus (probably because they are most active at dawn and dusk and we were there in the late afternoon). After the disappointing lack of platypus we drove to the Wynyard caravan park to stay the night. The park was next to a lovely beach where we spent some of the evening.

Hope everyone is having a good holiday so far!
